Happy Friday fashion fam! We are back with another Fashion Feature Friday and today I am featuring a talented designer and entrepreneur, Martasia Person!
Martasia has been in the fashion industry for almost a decade working in production, product development, and now designing for one of the top retailers. As a first-generational grad/entrepreneur, she understands the failures and successes attached to the industry and shares her learnings by creating resources for other designers.
Why did you decide to get into the fashion industry?
Fashion has always been in my DNA from a young age, making clothes for my barbies. It came full circle later in life when I started upcycling thrift clothes in college. A friend of mine introduced me to FIDM and I’ve been in the industry every since. Fashion was always a survival tool for me. Creating something out of nothing because it was all I had. Now I design in a way that fulfills the needs of others.
What are some things you have planned for your business?
I create resources for fashion designers. My Fashion Collection Planner is a tool that helps designers build cohesive collections while keeping track of their production journey. It features sketch pages, sourcing templates, manufacturing checklists, and more. Additionally to that, I also teach masterclasses purposed to help designers understand how to build a fashion product from start to finish.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone looking to enter this industry?
Education and connections! Invest in your education whether you’re in school, taking masterclasses, or interning for a company. The hands-on experience you gain will put you years ahead and help you avoid costly mistakes. Also, build genuine connections and by genuine, I mean connections that don’t have a hidden agenda. Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Staying connected to the right people will help jump-start your career, understanding that this industry is truly small.
